A Generous Spirit

When I think of Randy it is the eighties again. He’s the handsome father of two beautiful young children, Cassidy and Jessica, and loving husband to his devoted beautiful wife Laura.  Rob and I are new to Maine, penniless and know no one.  The Parmleys immediately befriend us and treat us like family.

Our Friday nights are spent enjoying dinners in their big cozy kitchen. The house, warmed by a wood stove on cold nights, is full of instruments. Randy is a carefree flute player, music lover, stone mason and sculptor.  Randy introduces us to the joys of Maine – kayaking, crosscountry skiing and LL Bean.

Although I hate the thought of raw fish, he invites us to one of his infamous sushi parties.  As a great storyteller, he talks for hours on end as he rolls sushi. By the time the food arrives I’m so famished that I instantly love sushi then and ever since.

Back then, Rob and I never went out to eat as we had no extra money. I’ll never forget the time Randy and Laura, who did not have much themselves, treated us to dinner out in Camden. That kind of sharing spirit stands out and is memorable.

And that is the way the Parmley family treated everyone, friend and stranger, who arrived at their door. Love of family, life, music, sports, art and generosity to others. That is how I want to remember Randy. May his soul rest in peace.
