Edward A. Ludwig, 84 passed away at his home after a brief illness on September 26,2018 with his loving family by his side. Ed was born on June 10, 1934 in Gardiner, Maine to parents Edward I. Ludwig and Florence Marshall Ludwig.

Ed attended and graduated from Gardiner, Maine public schools and received his BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Maine. Ed’s working career was as a Chemical Engineer for Monsanto Chemical, an owner/operator of the Rabbit Hill Inn in Lower Waterford, VT, as well as a business broker for Yankee Business Brokers of Maine.

Never one to sit idle Ed was a world traveler, loved sailing & fishing, was an accomplished fine furniture craftsman and above all loved spending time with his loving wife Nancy and family. Ed so enjoyed growing up in the Gardiner area , Ed had a lifelong love for the Belgrade Lakes, ultimately refurbishing their serene lakefront home in Rome, Maine with his wife Nancy.

Ed was community minded having served on the School Boards of West Springfield, MA and the SAD # 50 School Board when he moved to Mid-Coast Maine. Ed was also a member of the Thomaston Green Redevelopment Committee ( former Maine State Prison site) Ed was also a member of the order of the ELKS .

Ed’s family fondly recalls him as being a kind loving husband, and respected, caring and loving father. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Ed was predeceased by his parents and two step children, Gregory Schneller and Nina Maxwell.

Ed is survived by his loving wife Nancy S. Ludwig of Thomaston, Maine, his brother and sister in law Richard and Marge Ludwig of Williamsburg, VA, his sister and brother in law Helen and Ron Jiracek of St. Michael, MN , his half sister Mary DeBoer of Lacey, WA. Along with his daughter and son in law Laura Ludwig and Bob Fuller of Weston, MA, his son and daughter in law Rick and Lora Ludwig of Thomaston, ME, his daughter and son in law Linda and Don Schmidt of Hamden, MA. He is also survived by his step son and wife George and Kirsten Schneller of Lawrenceville, NJ, a stepson Peter Schneller of Alliance, OH, a stepson Richard Schneller of Rockland, ME, a stepdaughter and husband Scilla and Doug Yukich of Alliance, OH and a son in law and wife Bruce and Kerry Maxwell of Chandler, AZ. He is also survived by his nieces Nancy English of Portland, ME, Marjory Ludwig of State College, PA, Helen Ludwig of Charlottsville, VA, and Beth Ludwig of Richmond, VA. He is also survived by a nephew John D. Ginsberg of Plymouth, MA.

Ed also leaves his beloved 14 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren ( with one on the way) and many close friends.

A memorial Service for family and friends will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 200 Main Street, Thomaston, Maine.

The family request that memorial donations be made in Ed’s name to the Pope Memorial Humane Society, P.O. Box 1294, Rockland, Maine 04841.
