Obituary for Dorothy L. Dinsmore
Dorothy L. Dinsmore, 98, passed away peacefully at Clover Health Care in Auburn on January 15, 2023.
She was born in Corinna, Maine on December 15, 1924, one of seven siblings of Helen (Curtis) Smith and Archibald Smith. Dorothy grew up in the Corinna and Fairfield areas. She graduated from Lawrence High School in Fairfield. Dorothy married Raymond Dinsmore on September 16, 1945 and were married five days shy of 75 years.
She attended Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, MA, graduating in 1959 as Valedictorian of her class. She started teaching school at Atlantic Junior High School in Quincy while at the same time attending Simmons College in Boston, earning her Masters Degree for Library Science. In 1964 they moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho where she taught for a year at Bonneville High School before moving back to Quincy for 2 years, then back to Idaho in 1967 where she taught for 28 years at Marsing High School, retiring in 1995. Upon her retirement, the Marsing High School Library was named in her honor.
In 1996 they built their “forever home” log home on Sennebec Pond in Union.
Dorothy was a member of Phi Beta Kappa Society and the American Association of University Women. She was a perpetual learner. She was always resolute and determined. She was a very loving person and was always interested in a good discussion, and simply adored her husband, Raymond.
She volunteered a lot at the Union Library, setting up the Dewey Decimal System.
Dorothy is predeceased by her husband Raymond, and her siblings Rev. Ernest Smith, Rev. Keith Smith and Elizabeth Rich.
She is survived by her sons Raymond E. Dinsmore, Jr. of Easthampton, MA., and Frederick E. Dinsmore and his wife Sally of Newton, NH; her sisters Wilma Jackson of Lisbon, ME, Cheryl Paddack of Waterville, ME, and Helen Linkletter of Athens, ME; and grandchildren Kimberly Connor of Boise, ID, and Raymond Dinsmore of Florence, MA, and six great grandchildren.
A Funeral Service will be held at the Church of the Nazarene, 81 Main Street, Fairfield, Maine on January 31 at 11:00 a.m., followed by a committal service at 1:00 p.m. at the Maine Veterans Cemetery Chapel in Augusta. Luncheon, to follow Committal Service at the Maine Veterans Cemetery Chapel, will be held at the Olive Garden Restaurant in Augusta, 205 Civic Center Drive at 1:45 pm. All are welcome.
