Obituary for David R. Harris

David R. Harris 78, formerly of East Winthrop, Jefferson and Scarborough, Maine, has passed away peacefully at The Heron House in Cumberland Foreside, Maine, after a lengthy battle with heart/kidney failure. On July 11, 1943 David was born in Gardiner, Maine to Lilian and Walter Harris.

He was schooled in Augusta and Charleston, Maine, graduating in 1962 from The Higgins Classical Institute. David married Carol Weymouth in 1962; by 1970 the family was complete and the family had moved into a larger home on Old Augusta Road in East Winthrop.

During those early years, David worked during the day and schooled at night. He was a member of the IBEW and was accepted for an apprenticeship, gaining his full electrical license in 1980. David found work in many papermills in Maine. He worked on the “new” PenBay Hospital and the Twin Towers when those were being built.

When possible, Carol took the girls to him. Summers were spent in the town he was working in. In the early 1980’s, he became the city electrician for Augusta, Maine. He remained in that job for quite some time. Around the same time in his life, he became a firefighter for Augusta, Winthrop and surrounding towns. Earning service awards along the way.

Eventually David and Carol travelled and worked together. Bringing the camper for months on end. Retirement meant more camping, fishing, card games and napping!!! To be closer to the ocean he moved to Jefferson, Maine and redid the innards of the house he bought. Cleared two acres and called it the retirement home.

David was quiet throughout his life but with a humor to hit you on the way out the door.
David was predeceased by his wife Carol. Daughter Donna Croxford. He is survived by two daughters Diane Bond of Augusta, Maine and Lynn Tucker of Scarborough, Maine. He also has many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A private graveside service for David will be in the Spring.

David’s family would like to thank The Heron House for the unbelievable support, respect and dignity during his illness.
