Charles Alvan (Al) Barbour, 94 of Friendship, went peacefully to be with the Lord, at his home with his loving family by his side on August 10, 2023. Al was born on January 17, 1929, to Arthur A. Barbour and Marion (Beatty) Barbour in Melrose, Massachusetts.
Al attended Western High School in Arlington, Virginia, graduating in 1947. After high school, he enlisted in the US Army and served his country from 1951-1953, as a helicopter mechanic. Al and Sandra were married in December of 1956 and as they both reported it was love at first sight when they met.
Al and his family moved from Maryland to Maine in 1970 to be closer to his parents. Dad loved owning and working on his Volkswagens. Prior to moving to Maine permanently, his family recalls many trips made from Maryland to Maine for summer vacations with the kids and pets packed into a Volkswagen Bug or Van. Al worked as a Sheet Metal Fabricator and retired from SteelPro at the age of 72. Every one that knew Dad remembers him as a true perfectionist.
Al’s hobbies included hunting, fishing and working on and collecting antique outboard motors. He had been working on special outboards for his great grandsons and was happy to be able to present them prior to his passing. He was also on the board for the Roadside Cemetery Association in Friendship and was a member of the Advent Christian Church in Friendship.
Al is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Sandra Joan Barbour of Friendship, daughter Lauren Barbour Watts (Todd) of Tenants Harbor, son Kevin Mark Barbour (Sherri) of Waldoboro, granddaughters Sarah Orlandello (Joseph) of Union, Megan Watts Berube (Bryan) of Hanover, New Hampshire, Molly Boulette (Nathan) of Waldoboro, Alexandra Watts (Page) of Pownal, Anne Barbour of Waldoboro and Taylor Watts Hall (Taylor) of Freeport, great grandchildren Ezra and Amos Orlandello, Nora,Thomas and Louisa Berube, Elia, Lucy, Mia and Hazel Boulette, Griffin Nichols Watts and Khyver and Bentley Denman. Dad was affectionately known as Dumpy by all of his family. Dumpy will be greatly missed by family and friends but we were so fortunate to have him in our lives for so many wonderful years.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 18, 2023, at 1pm at the Roadside Cemetery in Friendship with Wally Simmons officiating.
Hall’s of Waldoboro has care of the arrangements. To extend online condolences, light a candle for Charles or to share a picture or story, please visit his Book of Memories at www.hallfuneralhomes.com
